BUS TRACKING AND E-CABS
In January, Taichung city officials unveiled several promising new measures
that should lead to big improvements in the less-than-great public transportation
situation. First, there was the introduction of the island's first
three electric buses, which are now running along Taichung Bus Company's
(the green buses) routes 1, 3 and 5, and on Jen You Company's (orange
buses) route 22. Keep an eye for these clean and quiet machines,
which may grow in number if all goes well.
Even more far-reaching is the introduction of a GPS
satellite-based tracking system which, within the next six months, should
be installed on most of the city's 250 public buses and will allow citizens
to use track the exact location of all buses, via an electronic map on
the city government's website. Buses will also have on-board LED
signs indicating current position and next stop and plans call for electronic
bus-stop signs to do the same. All this should mean less time-wasting
waiting for buses.
A similar system, which will be introduced to at least 300 'E-Cabs',
boosts safety for taxi passengers. For NT$200 per year, residents
can purchase a personalized IC card which, when swiped on an electronic
reader installed in cabs, provides monitoring of passenger and cab via
the same city website GPS map. The system is only in Chinese at
this point, although English may be added later. Check out the map
in the city government's official website at http://www.tccg.gov.tw.
