Perhaps the closet thing to the well-known Ikea brand of stores that Taichung has is Working House, a large Western-style household goods store chain that carries attractive, reasonably-priced items, imported and local.  Working House's latest branch has opened in the heart of the Tunghai Peihshu (villa), the college town at the top of the hill overlooking the university.  The four-floor building has accessories and stationery on the first floor; kitchen and table ware--including a lot of very attractive glassware and crockery--on the second floor; bathroom stuff, interior decorations, furniture and other items (candles, picture frames, pillows, etc.) on the third; and gardening products and related items on the fourth.  Turning off of Taichung Kang Road onto Shinshing Road, go back a couple hundred meters and turn left at the Y-intersection.  Be aware that traffic and parking are hellish, particularly on weekends and evenings.  For downtown residents, try other Working House outlets at 133-2, Sanmin Road, sec. 3 (tel. 2223-2758); 132, Meitsun Road, sec. 1 (tel. 2325-6212), or 556, Tatun Road (tel. 2319-8003), opposite Carrefour.
