Cai Rui-yue is an extremely important name in the Taiwan dance community. The dance studio that was burned to the ground a few years ago was known as the cradle of Taiwan dance, nurturing a number of dancers who became professionals. Most of Taiwan's most important choreographers have also trained there. International dance icon Martha Graham also visited there once.
The phoenix-like dance studio has been designated by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Taipei City government as the Taipei Dance Exchange Center. The Japanese-style black tile roof has been rebuilt as has the historic No 1 Dance Classroom has been rebuilt. A display room has been added that shows dance-related exhibits from the past. The former Last Waltz is still a coffee shop and has a performance space. There is now an outside performance space too. Lane 48 is now once added ringing to the sound of music, dance steps and the smell of coffee. --By Ken Lin
