upcoming WHAT'S COOKING

Dionysus' Epicurean Corner
As the summer grows hotter, stickier, and all together more unpleasant in the middle of the day, it's important to know where you can find refuge from the weather and enjoy a tasty meal. Here are all kinds of refreshing places you can eat to beat the heat.

Dean & Deluca, in the Breeze Center, is a refreshing American-style Sushi place that will definitely take the humidity off of your mind. Unlike other traditional Japanese sushi places, D&D prefers high-quality cooked fish over raw fish. The rice is also carefully selected. Every piece of sushi is freshly prepared for each customer, and each bite is a tasty mouthful of fresh ingredients.

Konaya (02 2751-3568) has come up with a few special heat-killing summer dishes, as well. Try heir new Cool Curry Udon with Poached Pork Slice Set (NT$220), it's refreshing, filling, and comes highly recommended.

Thai food is another great way to kick start your appetite in the heat. Sukhothai, situated in the Sheraton Taipei, has recently launched Open Kitchen, where you can watch how the yummy dishes are made. The 15 authentic offerings here include Crispy Potatoes with Shrimp and Red Curry Sauce, Thai Spicy Fermented Pork Spare Ribs, Braised Beef with Pumpkin in Masaman Curry, and Thai Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup in Coconut Soup.

You can enjoy five star hotel cuisine simply by flying with China Airlines, as well. From now until June 30th, 2009, China Airlines is pampering its business class customers with delicious Shanghai cuisine from the Grand Formosa. The routes include flights from Taipei to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Sapporo. For passengers flying between Taiwan and China on the weekends, specially prepared, authentic Chinese cuisine like Meat Stone Braised Pork Belly, Jadeite Cabbage with Insects, Stewed Chicken in Huadiao, and Braised Boneless Pork Rib in Soy Sauce will be served. Check out www.china-airlines.com.

To compliment the upcoming Olympics, Cold Stone Creamery has come up with five new ice cream flavors to help keep you cool. Cold Stone Home Run, Black Belt, Gold Overload, The Swimmer, and The Weight Lifter are available for a limited time. From now until August 24th, any Coldstone purchase comes with a raffle ticket to win a trip to Beijing! The price of all the awards exceeds NT$1 million, so with your ice cream, why not try your luck?

Finally, this Chinese Valentines Day happens to fall on a Thursday, which it's why I'm recommending you try SIRIS. Situated on AnHe Road, SIRIS will provide seven special Valentines Meals with drinks to your delight until mid-night. Book your table now by calling, (02) 2733-6215.

_The Neglected Existence-Solo Exhibition by Pang-Chieh Hsu
In this exhibition, Hsu portraits each and every neglected corner in our daily life: the windowsill layered with sunshine, the unmade bed sheet, the wooden wall with scars of time, the efflorescent bathroom, and an old sink that serves as a mini-storage... these corners age with people's touch and the test of time. They seem to be old and worn out, and at the same time lonely and forgotten. They present a surreal atmosphere that's both familiar and alien. In their placidity, these forgotten pieces remind us the neglected pieces of our lives, and tell the stories of their own. Exhibition info: Until Sep. 14 at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, (02) 2595-7656.
