CELEBRATIONS / GATHERINGS / ACTIVITIES

* City residents are invited to give a gift to a needy child through the Grand Formosa Hotel's Angel Tree activity. From December 4 until the end of the month, visit the hotel's 12th-floor lobby and pick a Wish Card--containing the name of a specific child--from the tree. The children, chosen by the Chinese Fund for Children and Families, are all 14 years and under and are in foster care due to abuse, neglect or loss of a parent, or are children of disabled, imprisoned or terminally-ill parents. The card is then attached to a gift, which may be dropped off at the 12th-floor concierge for delivery. The hotel may be contacted at 328-8000 for more information.

* The International Women's Association of Taichung Children's Christmas Party will take place on Sunday, December 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at The Landis Hotel's third floor. This annual event provides some Christmas fun for the kids with a variety of fun activities. Parents are requested to bring a snack and gift for each child--call for specific details. Cost includes framed photo of each child with Santa. Participation costs NT$100 for IWAT members and NT$200 for non-members. Call Susan Bailey 0916-289-733 or Jodi Dickman 461-4784 for information and reservations.

* The International Women's Association of Taichung Christmas Formal will take place on Saturday, December 9, from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Grand Formosa Hotel. This annual formal event will begin with a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. in the hotel's 12th-floor Wine & Cigar Bar, followed by a 7:30 p.m. dinner in the 13th-floor Ginyin 1 Room and dancing to midnight. Participants can then continue partying with free admission to the hotel's Catwalk night club. Cost includes hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, juice, six-course Christmas dinner, and lucky-draw ticket, and there will be a cash bar. Formal dress is requested (dark suites are okay). Tickets are NT$1,600 for IWAT members and NT$2,000 for non-members. Call Susan Bailey at 0916-289-733 or Jodi Dickman at 461-4784 for information and reservations.

* The Christian Women's Club Christmas Luncheon will take place on Saturday, December 9, at the Howard Prince Hotel's 17th-floor, at 11:30 a.m. Everyone, including husbands, are welcome to this bimonthly English/Chinese get-together. Special speaker Dr. Jen, of the Tunghai University's Department of Social Work, will speak on "Leading a Fulfilled and Happy Life". Advance-purchase tickets are NT$500 for adults and NT$400 for children (add NT$50 for purchase at the door). Call Patti Garrido at 461-4642 for information/reservations.

* The Taichung American Chamber of Commerce 2000 Christmas Celebration will take place on Saturday, December 16, at the Grand Formosa Hotel's 13th-floor Jin Yin Room from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This annual traditional Christmas event will include a Christmas buffet dinner, live Christmas instrumental and vocal performances by the Morrison Academy Chamber Singers and Lincoln American School Bell Choir, a raffle-prize drawing, and baby-sitters for families with children. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost NT$1,100 for adults and NT$600 for children (under 140 cm tall).
