Adapted from the classical fairy tale
of Little Red Riding Hood, this new version takes on
a new look for all the characters as well as the story
that we thought we knew so well.
Ever since "Shrek", humorously-twisted versions
of well-known fairy tales have been flooding onto the
Hollywood scene. A roller coaster of hilarity replaces
naivety in these drastically revised classics, which
are now joined by yet another example--the new 3D computer-animated
film "Hoodwinked".
In this film, the story of Little Red Riding Hood has
become a criminal case with Little Red Riding Hood,
the Big Bad Wolf, Grandma and the Woodsman as major
suspects, each telling a different version of the story.
Along comes frog detective Nicky Flippers, whose skills
can be compared to the well-known specialists of "CSI:
Crime Scene Investigation". On top of this, all
the animals in the forest have become witnesses, adding
fuel to the fire with their various points of view and
making this missing persons/kidnap case more complicated
by the minute. Why did the Woodsman appear at that precise
moment? What was the reason behind Big Bad Wolf impersonating
Grandma? And what was Grandma plotting all along?
Naturally, all the characters in this story are no longer
the simple ones we remember from the fairy tale. The
seemingly innocent Little Red Riding Hood (Anne Hathaway)
has become a sophisticated young teen, while fierce-looking
Big Bad Wolf is really a kind-hearted, sweet soul deep
inside. The gentle and kind Grandma (Glenn Close) in
the fairy tale is now an extreme sports addict. As for
the peace-loving Woodsman, we soon discover that he
is really filled with deep ambition.
It may be difficult imagining such a classic tale being
twisted to such a degree, but you can be rest assured
that it will have you rolling in your seats with laughter.
Films like these are often geared towards American-style
humor that can be lost on most non-Americans. However,
the slapstick humor here sees no cultural boundaries,
and is the main reason why films like these attract
the younger generation. So, take your serious hat off
when you go watch "Hoodwinked" and enjoy the
fact that it's a comedic animated movie. Stop finding
faults, relax and sit back, and hold on to your tummy
as you laugh your head off.
