Decorated with green plants, red lanterns, old pictures, log wood furniture and served by waitresses in traditional Chinese outfits, this shop sells traditional Hakka food. Liaw Ma handmakes plum products like plum juice and plum vinegar which is known to increase appetite. In consideration of modern people's health and changing tastes, Liaw Ma has altered the heavily sour and salty taste of Hakka food to a lighter flavor. Having opened for 11 years now, Liaw Ma's specialties are the only in town which include sweet plum ribs (large NT$350, small NT$250), Hakka steamed egg (NT$150) and fried pineapple with pig intestines (large NT$350, small NT$250). For those looking for authentic Hakka food, Liaw Ma has Fu Tsai Soup and Hakka leftovers which is a required dish at temple feasts. Several traditional Hakka dishes on the menu challenge the memory of the pickiest connoisseurs. Liaw Ma, the founding president of Taichung fine foods society, is currently the teacher for professional cooking and author of Hakka cookbooks.
