Jade
& Artists Dance Troupe
By Ken Lin
Translated by Yvonne Chen
|
On the day of the interview, the Jade & Artists
Dance Troupe was rehearsing for the 2003 Paraguay
Cultural Exchange in October. The dancers' delicate,
full, and soft figures presented the fascinating and
graceful oriental lines that distinguish this troupe.
The
Jade & Artists Dance Troupe has always worked
hard in traditional Chinese dance creation, and focused
on Chinese mythology and legends. To combine Chinese
traditions with Western dance techniques, dancers
trained in classical ballet and modern dance also
receive lessons in meditation, chi, and art, to create
body language unique to the group. In addition to
the Paraguay tour, the group has performed in Germany,
France, Belgium and other countries. Through these
events, traditional Chinese dance has been revealed
to international audiences.
To
present the grace, refinement, and elegance of classical
Chinese dance, the troupe pays particular attention
to form. In addition, they have added new elements
in musical arrangement and choreography to bypass
traditional boundaries. Eastern qualities such as
circles and gentleness are displayed through soft
lines; the result may not seem as explosive as modern
Western dance, or as lengthy as classical ballet,
but it exudes a limitless continuity that stretches
on like soft silk.
Besides
public performances overseas and at home, the troupe
also gives something back to the community by performing
at convalescent homes. Recently, they have focused
on free outdoor performances and dance lessons for
residents. They hope to reach and interact with the
community and thereby promote the art of dance, and
in this way help more people enjoy their works.
