I returned recently to Louis XIV, an intimate and cosy little bistro just a stone's throw from the bustle of XinYi and DunHua Roads. I was happy to have Claire, the hostess, make a few suggestions. The Pan-Fried Foie Gras with Passion fruit (NT$460) was perfectly seared on the outside, and creamy pink in the centre. The richness of the foie gras was offset by the tanginess of the passion fruit. I chose one of the set menus, comprising Cream of Tomato Soup, Smoked Salmon Salad with Cream Cheese, Scallops with Fennel and Orange Sauce, and coffee-all for just NT$1,000. I challenge anyone to find a better deal on fine dining. The soup was blended to a slightly rougher texture in keeping with the restaurant's Provencal emphasis and the scallops were tender and juicy. I couldn't resist following up with the Nougatine (NT$180), a home-made ice-cream containing orange rind and toasted almonds.
