In 1946, several culinary enthusiasts met during a training
session in Taipei's Gong Guan. From Hakka, Hunan and
Szechuan backgrounds, they created a kind of beef noodles
with a great soup base, tender meat and chewy noodles.
Mr Zhang, of Hakka origin, was the first to open up
a noodle shop in Taipei's Gong Guan, but later moved
to Jhong Li (chungli), and has been famous in the Taoyuan
and Hsinchu area for over 50 years. Mr. Sam Liu, an
expert in running a chain of barbeque restaurants, met
old master Mr. Zhang through some friends. A gourmet
himself, Liu wanted to preserve the old master's skills
and, after years of learning, he finally opened his
own Ke Xiang Quan Beef Noodles near the Taipei Railway
Station. Interestingly, this noodle shop looks more
like a modern cafe, completely different from traditional
noodles shops. The beef noodles here are aromatic and
not greasy, the beef tender and delicious. All the noodles,
appetizers and sauces have been carefully created at
the central kitchen in Shizi by Liu. It is no wonder
that this place has been packed with customers since
the day it opened, with many old timers coming here
for the original flavors they once loved. Apart from
Beef Noodles, other dishes such as the Pork with Dry
Noodles, Ham Noodles, and a variety of dumplings are
also available.
