Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan is bringing a selection of some of the finest moments in the company's repertoire to Taichung for a free outdoor performance on Saturday, July 20, at 7:30pm in Civic Square. To celebrate Cloud Gate's 40th anniversary, the performance will include excerpts from Legacy, Moon Water, Pine Smoke and How Can I Live on Without You. Program highlights include the scene from Legacy portraying Chinese immigrants crossing the perilous waters of the Taiwan Strait on the way to their new home, and excerpts from the overwhelmingly successful How Can I Live on Without You, in which the choreography of Lin Hwai-min is put to popular Chinese melodies sung by divas past and present.
As the first professional dance company in Taiwan and the first contemporary dance troupe in the greater Chinese-speaking community, Cloud Gate made history upon its inception in 1973. Over the past forty years, the company has conceived and produced more than 160 works presented by theatres and festivals around the world. Cloud Gate founder and artistic director Lin Hwai-min has been honored with numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Dance Festival. Just recently, the International Dance Committee of ITI asked Lin to author the Message of International Dance Day 2013, which he delivered at the Dance Day celebration in Paris this past April.
Every year since they first partnered in 1996, Cloud Gate and Cathay Life have been organizing free outdoor performances all across Taiwan. This year additional support has been provided by the Taichung City Government, which is inviting one and all to come and celebrate Cloud Gate's 40th birthday, experience the power of Lin Hwai-min's exceptional choreography, and marvel at the unparalleled technique of the Cloud Gate dancers.
Note: Admission is free of charge. Please be seated on the lawn, and bring a raincoat in case of rain. For safety reasons, we ask that you refrain from using an umbrella during the performance.
