This restaurant's mostly Thai and Vietnamese dishes, prepared from fresh ingredients and offered for reasonable prices, have pleased many customers' palates. The many entree options include old favorites when it comes to Thai stir-fried and deep-fried entrees, cold dishes, and fried rice, as well as a variety of noodle soups and stir-fried "pho" noodles. The most popular dish is Red Curry Beef Pho. The chef stir-fries beef with vegetables and blends these with tender pho noodles for an addicting sweet-and-spicy flavor. Another unforgettable favorite, Thai Sour and Spicy Seafood Pho is not as spicy as it sounds and offers seafood in richly flavored lemongrass soup. --By Chloe Huang

For the past eight years this restaurant has offered an interesting selection of Thai, Yunnanese and Burmese cuisine. Customers will find a variety of soups, fried rice dishes, hot pots and curries on the menu, all very reasonably priced. Many Yunnan and Thai dishes can be spicy, so diners can request that spiciness levels of their meals be adjusted to suit their tastes. --By James Kane

A: One of the most famous of all Thai foods, Spicy Sour Seafood Soup (NT$199), has a soothing broth that lights up the taste buds. Shrimp, squid, mussels and mushrooms combine with the flavors of lemongrass and lemon leaves to generate a special aroma.

B: A popular choice, Thai Coconut Milk Chicken (NT$189), gets its rich, creamy flavor from Thai spices combined with coconut milk and fried chicken breast.

37, NanMen Rd, South Dist
Hours: 11: 30 am-2 pm, 5-8 pm

If you're seeking excellent Thai cuisine in Taichung's South District, look no further than Yunnan Thai Food. This unassuming restaurant features set meals (from NT$80-100) but its menu is best enjoyed if you bring a few friends with you. Please be aware that the Chinese menu is more extensive than the English one, so having someone who can read Chinese is useful. --By Daniel White

A: For appetizers, both the Satay (NT$139) and Fried Spring Rolls (NT$100) are great for whetting the palate. The satay is juicy with a light curry flavor that pairs well with a sweet-and-spicy sauce. The spring rolls are crispy and stuffed with tender pork, green onions and soft noodles.

B: For a main course, you can't go wrong with Roast Pork with Lemon Sauce (NT$139) or Spicy Coconut Chicken (NT$139). The soothing coconut sauce blends perfectly with the slightly-spicy curry and succulent chicken breast.

Situated in an unassuming building just south of SOGO, this restaurant's humble appearance belies a truly delicious range of authentic Thai dishes. The extensive menu covers all the traditional favourites and prices are very reasonable. For lunch, there's a budget set available with soup, main course and rice for around NT$100, depending on your choice. A: Red Curry With Chicken (NT$180) departs a bit from the usual Thai recipe. With potatoes, carrots and chicken on the bone, it's reminiscent of a Massuman curry but the creamy, red flavour is still in there.

B: Green Curry With Chicken (NT$180) is a traditional dish, offering a pleasant level of spiciness and very succulent chicken chunks.

C: No Thai meal is complete without Thai Milk Tea (NT$40), perfect for taming the spices after a hot meal.
