Pulau Redang is Taichung's first Malaysian vegetarian restaurant. The Malaysian chef here has come up with a variety of dishes inspired by traditional Malay cuisine such as Bak Ku Teh, coconut rice, and curry "fish heads". Made with various spices like turmeric, lemongrass and cloves, these flavory entrees attract both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners alike. --By Niang Chen, translated by Angel Pu
A. Hainanese Chicken Rice (NT$139) contains smoked vegetarian chicken made of konjac jelly and should be enjoyed with sour and sweet chili sauce and turmeric rice. Containing bean sprouts and mushrooms, Malaysian Fried Noodles (NT$70) has a simple, but addictive, flavor.
B. Made with lemongrass, peanuts, curry powder and chili, the satay sauce has to be cooked for two hours before being added to the vegetarian Satay Sticks (NT$90). Coconut Kangar Toast (NT$55) is a sweet snack with a unique flavor.
C. Named after a famous Malaysian island, this eatery has an outdoor dining area and kids' playroom.
