This little Japanese eatery is one of those unobtrusive gems well worth discovering. Located on GongYi Road between WenXin and HuiWen roads, it is named after Head Chef Dong Yi-chuan, whose distinguished Japanese cooking resume includes years at the Windsor Hotel's Japanese outlet and Taichung's very reputable Sono restaurant. Many of his creative Japanese dishes are exclusive inventions, ensuring that your meal won't be run-of-the-mill. Most diners opt for one of the set meals, starting with the reasonably-priced, six-course NT$480 Business Lunch, which offers a choice from four main-course options (such as sashimi and abalone). Dinner sets start at NT$800 and go up through NT$1,200. There is also a NT$1,000 flexible option that leaves the entire meal up to Chef Dong. Other menu items include NT$980 Japanese shabu shabu hotpot choices. Spend over NT$1,000 here and they'll also give you NT$500 in coupons for future visits. --By Douglas Habecker, translated by Ann Lee

A. The Fragrant Pan-Fried Sushi is one of Chef Dong's creative approaches to a traditional dish and consists of six delectable, lightly-browned rice rolls, filled with avocado scallops and sashimi. The result is nicely crunchy on the outside and soft and fragrant on the inside. This item is not normally on the menu, but can be specially requested. Other must-try items include the Japanese-style Eel Salad (NT$200), with wide, almost cake-like slices of savory eel, surrounded by vegetables and topped with a sweet sauce.

B. In addition to the long dining bar downstairs, the restaurant has cozy upstairs tables situated in a traditional Japanese setting. There is also a semi-private area with a 10-person round table for larger groups.
