As you read the beautiful menus at Gen Tei Shoku, traces of Japanese influence in the ambience will transport you to an old street in Kyoto or Osaka. The specialty dish here, the Stone Pot Rice, serves three to four people (NT$360-NT$380). It is prepared with specially selected Yue Guang rice from I-lan county's WuJie village, and konbu broth, and is cooked evenly in stone pots right before your eyes in front of the restaurant. Their mackerel dishes and bamboo shoots with clams are light but delicious, while the smoked eel dishes and Chicken with Gobo are rich and fragrant. There are about 10 set meals (NT$200-NT$320), each served with pickled vegetables, salad, hors d'oeuvres and soup. There are four kinds of rice--sesame salt rice, vegetable rice, rice with dried fish, and rice with mashed yams. They also provide additional servings of rice and soup. The homestyle-flavored Tofu with Beef is especially popular. Younger diners especially enjoy the Pork Cutlet. Other popular choices include the Rice with Wild Mushrooms and Beef and Salt Baked Mackerel. Gen Tei Shoku also takes pride in its sashimi and nigiri, made with fresh seafood from DongGang. Among the many wonderful desserts (NT$80-NT$120) are Tomato Yogurt Jello, Japanese ice cream, red bean soup, and Creme Brulee.
