With its quaint exterior--complete with a miniature bridge and a welcoming bench--No. 6 Luminous Garden restaurant reminded me of a little country house. This cozy theme continues inside the two-story establishment, which opened last February. After being seated and looking around, I realized it felt like we were sitting in my grandmother's living room. The decorations were very kitschy and ranged from a collection of porcelain dolls to a number of wooden cats. The floral wallpaper and the stiff, but comfortable, parlour chairs were all very reminiscent of the early 20th century.
Not speaking any Chinese, my dining companion and I were glad that the large menus were more like oversized photo albums, as there was no English inside. We were able to select our meals by merely pointing at the large photographs of the set-menu dinners, which included soup, salad, dessert and a drink. I opted for the Norwegian Salmon Steak with butter sauce (NT$380) and a milk tea, while my companion ordered the Filet Mignon (NT$680) and a Corona beer (NT$150).
To start, we had a bowl of pumpkin soup that was light and very tasty. Our garden salads and two pieces of garlic bread with cheese arrived next and both were good-sized portions, although the mayonnaise dressing on the salad could have been used a little more sparingly.
Our entrees came next and we eagerly dug into our generous portions, but not before admiring the presentation of our food. It was obvious that the chef had put some time and care into displaying our food on our plates. My salmon, cooked to perfection, came on a bed of spaghetti in alfredo sauce and was accompanied by broccoli, carrots and baby corn. Each bite melted in my mouth and the peppercorn seasoning added a bit of flair.
The filet came with a delicious baked potato, and was done perfectly on the second attempt. My companion felt it was a little undercooked when it first arrived, but the waitress was more than happy to return it to the kitchen for a few more minutes on the grill. When it returned, it was cooked just the way he liked it--still juicy and tender, but not underdone.
We finished our meals with a light Jell-O dessert and left feeling very pleased with our dining experience. The food was great, the service was friendly and the environment was very familiar and comfortable.
