Warm your hands and stomach at Country Goose Kitchen

By Annie Tai

While many look to large, chain restaurants to satisfy their appetites, Country Goose Kitchen offers what could be better – excellent food paired with a warm, earthy setting. This cottage house attracts many with not only great food but also a sweet and homey design, further proving that exquisite food can be enjoyed in a relaxed and informal light as well. All this is the result of the creative minds of Manager Joanne Chuang, who once worked for Evergreen Laurel Hotel, and her husband, Sun Yo-huei, previously employed at Ruth's Chris Steak House.

A wooden pathway leads up to the two-story restaurant. For those who prefer the open air, there are two tables in the garden next to some plants and a small pond. Joanne runs the first-floor bar, which faces a fireplace that contributes to the overall feeling.

Menu items include appetizers, pasta, entrees and drinks. Especially recommended are the U.S. Filet (NT$650), U.S. Prime Ribeye (NT$550 for 10oz, NT$750 for 16oz), Country Sauteed Shrimp (NT$380) and Roasted Chicken with Rosemary (NT$300). The U.S. Filet consists of imported beef sprinkled only with a fine mixture of salt and pepper for the most natural flavors. On the other hand, the Country Saut’eed Shrimp exhibits a strong garlic flavor; you can even soak the provided bread in the rich sauce. The recommended appetizer is the Seared Ahi Tuna (NT$250). The fresh tuna, bought each morning, is slightly toasted and colored on the outside while maintaining natural, uncooked flesh inside. Food is served at all hours, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Aside from the food, the setup of the restaurant is also a pleasant attraction. The mostly wooden interior softens the mood and the tables are comfortably spread around the interior. Interestingly, this restaurant is not the only Country Goose Kitchen in Taichung. The other one is located on Mei Tsun Road. Regrettably, it will close next month after being open for three years, as Joanne and Yo-Huei focus their efforts on further improvements to the larger restaurant. Here, true to the country image, their dog, Bunny, greets you at the front door. Joanne jokes, "Bunny helps our public relations – people come here just to see him."
