The Green Shoppe, which for some
years has been a wholesale and retail outlet for
clothes and other unique items imported from around
Asia, has moved from its original location on AnNing
Street, just behind Kaohsiung Railway Station,
to much larger premises on nearby JiuRu Road. The
customers are mostly women, aged 15 to 60.The new
store has a large selection of furniture from Indonesia,
clothing and knickknacks from Thailand, Nepal,
Tibet, China, and other countries, plus items designed
by owner Carolyn, who says: "Shoes, accessories,
bags--you can find everything here." Carolyn
often travels overseas in search of new products,
and is the sole importer for a line of high-quality
clothes from India. Green Shoppe also sells many
different kinds of imported incense, with every
customer receiving a free sample. According to
Carolyn, many return later specially to buy incense.
To enhance the shopping experience, one corner
of the store has been turned into an open-air coffee
shop which also sells simple snacks. See Green
Shoppe's website--which streams Indian pop music--for
more details. --By Steven Crook, translated by
