Made
in Taiwan Beer Bar
--- By Cheryl Sim Translated
by Annie Liu
Tucked away in a tiny street right in
the middle of downtown Kaoshiung is a warm and charming
bar called "Made in Taiwan". On WenHong 1st
Road, just north of the WuFu intersection, you will
see a gate with a neon pink sign saying "Harajuku".
Turn left there, into YuJhu Street, to grab an ice cold
beer. Once inside, you will instantly feel the warmth
and quirky character of this bar. Walls lined with old
beer bottles, recycled-tire bar stools, collections
of vintage Chinese postcards and posters, and even buoy
hangings make it feel like you're in a rustic little
museum.
One of the best things about this bar
is that there's no shortage of chilled Warsteiner (NT$360
a jug) on tap! Apart from this, there's a selection
of other imported beers and of course Taiwan beer (NT$100-NT$130)!
For those who prefer softer drinks, there's coffee,
tea and juice (where you can get the second one for
half price). With all that drinking you need to dry
your throat up with some tasty munchies. The spread
includes spicy pod beans (NT$30) and a variety of BBQs
(Mackerel, Fish Patty, Chicken Wings, Bacon with Cherry
Tomatoes, Mushrooms and Peppers--starting at NT$60).
The Deep Fried Taro with beef/pork (NT$180) and the
Big Mushroom sizzling hotplate both come highly recommended.
Jay, the wonderful owner, will always
welcome you with great conversations and laughs. Maybe
it's the English menu, the ice cold beer, BBQ grubs
and the fact that you're surrounded by things older
than you, or perhaps it's simply the sense of total
relaxation you feel. Whatever its secret, Made in Taiwan
Beer Bar is a unique, sociable bar where you can happily
chill out with your mates!
