There are places in Kaohsiung that are
as much part of the city as Monkey Mountain or the Love
River. One such place is The Dick & Cowboy (located
close to the Grand Hotel by ChengChing Lake). Many long-time
foreign residents consider the Dick & Cowboy a home
away from home. Many local residents think of it as
a place to go and have some good, clean, unpretentious
fun. Whatever the case may be, 'The Dick' rocks!
Long established, the Dick & Cowboy
is the home of the Kaohsiung Hash House Harriers, and
has seen many evenings of friendship and laughter. It
is a space where small bands can go and perform live.
It is a place that has regular special barbeques. It
is a place that is available to rent (at a mere NT$3000)
for private parties of 20 or more. They serve decent
meals at even more decent prices. Try the homemade chilli
for only NT$150, or their Beef Burger. It is a place
that is perfect for a quick drink to quench your thirst
after work, or spend an evening playing pool and enjoying
good company. More than anything else, the Dick &
Cowboy is a place where you can go and feel right at
home the very first time.
Every night until 10 p.m. is happy
hour, where bottled beers sell for NT$100, and soon
their menu will change, to offer even more. Owner Candice
(who happens to be one of the nicest people you're likely
to meet), likes to think of 'The Dick' as a place where
everyone and anyone is welcome to come and do almost
anything and everything they like (within reason). In
this writer's opinion, it would be difficult to think
of the Dick & Cowboy as a classy place, but very
easy to see why it is in a class of its own.
