This
month, the Olympic Games is returning to its birthplace--Athens,
Greece. From August 13 to August 29, more than 10,000
athletes from around 200 countries, including Taiwan
(Chinese-Taipei), will take part in over three hundred
different sports.
As a service to Olympic enthusiasts who don't have the time and/or money
to fly to Greece and enjoy the spectacle "in the flesh," and
who prefer to enjoy television coverage of the events in the company
of like-minded sports fans, FYI SOUTH has compiled a list of bars and
restaurants around South Taiwan which will be showing the 28th Olympiad.
AMERICAN PIE (123, ShingYe W. Rd., Chiayi City; tel (05) 283-5001) will
extend opening hours if there's enough demand, and is set to offer a
new menu item, Spicy Chicken Strips (NT$100), and will be selling big
bottles of beer for a bargain NT$100. The family-friendly atmosphere
and regular menu of American, Mexican, and Chinese favorites will continue
as usual.
By the time the games get underway, the owners of REBAR (365, JianKang
Rd., Sec. 1, Tainan City; tel (06) 263-6860) will have redecorated their
first floor, and will be showing Olympic events there. If you'd like
to arrange a private party for 40 or more people, contact the management
about reserving the entire second floor, with its 250-inch screen. REBAR
also offers a good selection of food and drinks, and has plenty of space
over three floors.
Aussie Jim, the newish co-owner of the ARMORY PUB (82, GungYuan S. Rd.,
Tainan City; tel (06) 226-9520), has made some changes to this long-running
watering hole. The satellite TV system was very well-received by customers
during Euro 2004, and he's just expanded the food selection. And if you
want to work, drink, and watch the Olympics all at the same time, now
you can--wireless Internet access has been installed.
WILLY'S SECOND BASE BAR & GRILL (321, JianKang Rd., Sec. 2, Tainan
City; tel (06) 291-1050)--run by a former professional baseball player--also
shows sports, and the food has been winning plaudits for years.
DNA (4F, 77 MinSheng 1st Rd., ShinShing, Kaohsiung City; tel (07) 227-2129)
is usually thought of as a dance venue, but Dermo, the boss, recently
invested in two new satellite TV systems for showing live sports.Call
for details.
TAVERN 65 (65, DaLi St., YenCheng, Kaohsiung City; tel (07) 551-6457)
is known for two things: good Western food and live sports. The boss
plans drink specials and food specials--details to be announced later--and
assures customers that the bar will stay open later--"especially
when Taiwan is playing, or England, or the United States."
As well as being a leading restaurant and disco, the PIG AND WHISTLE
(199, SzWei 4th Rd., LingYa, Kaohsiung City; tel (07) 330-1006) has regularly
being showing all major sporting events, including British soccer, international
rugby, and Formula 1 motor racing. During the Olympics, they'll stay
open late if Taiwan is doing well in baseball or table tennis, or if
guests from other countries show up in sufficient numbers to support
their athletes. The Pig & Whistle can show four different sports
events at the same time, and is adding another big screen downstairs.
The kitchen stays open until 2 am on weekdays, 4 am on weekends.
BLEACHERS SPORTS BAR (39, ShinLe St., YenCheng, Kaohsiung City; tel (07)
352-9787) will also be showing the Olympic Games, in addition to their
usual coverage of rugby, baseball, and other sports. For details, see
