Kaohsiung
has its fair share of clubs and pubs that fill up with
crowds of people from all walks of life. But surely
the need exists for an alternative: A more intimate
place where one can enjoy a drink, live sports, and
real conversation with friends.
This is exactly what Tavern 65 offers. Until recently,
a common reaction upon entering was: "How can a
place with a reputation so big be this small?" But
the New Year is bringing new things for Tavern 65.
After a big New Year's Eve party, they are doubling
in size, and putting in a pool table and other distractions.
They are also expanding the kitchen, and adding to
an already good selection of Western favorites (steak,
fish and chips, burgers, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding,
toad-in-the-hole).
The one thing they won't change, though, is the spirit
of Tavern 65. The staff here make you feel right
at home. "It
is your job to have a good time, and our job to make
sure that happens," says manager Shawn. "We
can do it, too, since we don't go over our capacity."
They cater to the needs of their customers with multiple
TVs (plus satellite dishes, which means they show live
all major sporting events); regular drinks specials (beers
and mixed drinks from NT$100, cheaper during the 5 pm
to 8 pm Happy Hour); and an atmosphere conducive to interesting
conversation. So, if your friends aren't up for a night
out, you can confidently go solo.
"We like things the way they are and we'll keep
doing it the way we have been," says Shawn.
To use a sporting metaphor, why change a winning
team?
Tavern 65 is located a short walk from WuFu 4th Road,
