Bar
the 42nd: Way above the clamor of the city
¡@¡@If
you talk about a bar having good "views," many will assume
you're referring to eye-candy barstaff, or an unusually good-looking
clientele. Certainly, not many drinking establishments in Taiwan
can boast of views like those that can be had from Bar the 42nd.
¡@¡@On
the 42nd floor of the Linden Hotel--hence the name--this place has
large windows to make the best of its position. Were it not for
the relatively late opening time (currently 8 pm), this would be
a splendid place to watch the sun set over the city. Even so, the
nighttime views toward the harbor and Wanshoushan are pleasant.
¡@¡@Bar
the 42nd is a smallish watering hole. The decor is conservative,
the seating comfortable, the lighting soft. Music aside, this
place could almost be considered a lounge bar, dating from
well before lounge became all the rage.
¡@¡@Considering
the plush nature of the Linden Hotel, the prices here are
not at all excessive: beers go for NT$100 to NT$160, cocktails
for NT$250 to NT$280, rums and cognacs for around NT$200.
The list of liqueurs (all NT$200) is unusually extensive.
¡@¡@Promotions
and specials are frequent (see this month's WHAT'S ON section
for details), but volume drinking would seem out of place
here. Relaxation is the keyword. Sip, and watch the night.
