Sontenkan is an ambitious family-oriented theme park that recently opened in the hill country of Minhsiung, a 30-minute drive from Chiayi City, and adjacent to the campus of National Chungcheng University. Operated by the Nice Corporation, which runs several other theme parks in Taiwan, Sontenkan uses motifs from the Indonesian resort island of Bali in designs and park features. It's a family theme park, with overnight lodging available in tree houses (NT$2500 for a Bali-style tree house for four or six people). There's a shooting range for gun enthousiasts, a large shaded picnic and barbeque area, a well-stocked gift shop, several picturesque walking paths and a large camping area for overnight tenting as well. According to the Mr. Su, the general manager, the park is aiming to attract college students and family groups, although individuals and small groups of all ages are welcome. The grounds are well-kept and designed to make it look as though you are actually in Bali; the entire place is a visual feast and well worth a visit. --By Dan Bloom
