VISITOR RATINGS & REVIEWS The
Taiwan Salt Company has turned a four-story-high pile of salt into
a tourist attraction. When Salt Mountain was first opened to the
public, visitors were not allowed to clamber over this bizarre,
manmade deposit. But recently steps were cut into the sides of the
¡§mountain,¡¨ and visitors can now climb to the top for excellent
views over the pancake-flat countryside. Much of the mountain has
a brown, sandy crust, but other parts are snow white. Some visitors
try to sled down its flanks, while others make ¡§snowmen.¡¨ Who needs
Hehuanshan? A miniature train and pony rides are among the distractions.
The on-site supermarket sells Taiwan Salt Company products, including
shampoo, sun-tan lotion, and salty toothpaste. Salt Mountain is
best reached by taking Provincial Highway 17 to Chigu, then County
Road 176 toward the coast. Admission is free; parking costs NT$50
per car.
