One of the least expensive hotel buffets, the layout
here is nevertheless impressive. From Monday to Friday
enjoy their spread for NT$399/person. (Weekends are
NT$499). The spread includes an appetizer table with
items like vegetable rolls, salad bar, soups, scallops
and delicious seafood waffles. Displayed on a long bar-style
table manned by several chefs, you will find carved
roasted duck, Japanese style roasted chicken, deep fried
prawns, succulent slices of beef and several kinds of
French style breads. On the opposite side of the dining
room is a beverage table with fresh juice, coffee and
tea, and a nearby dessert table with sliced fruit and
a cooler of scoop-it-yourself ice cream with about half
a dozen flavours to choose from. Until December 20th
bring four people and the fifth person is free.

enjoy this truly inexhaustible feast. There are Chinese,
Western and Japanese dishes prepared in cold-platters,
steamed, boiled, stir-fried and deep fried. There is
a do-it-yourself Hot Pot section and even all you can
drink juice, coffee, tea, soda and beer (a choice of
dark or blonde ales are available). The dessert table
is also impressive with so many delicate pastries (seasonal),
chocolate covered bananas and ice cream. There is also
a large fresh fruit table with every kind of local fruit

Loved by many local families, and also a favorite with
many companies for office outings, Tasting The World
lives up to its name by offering dishes from almost
every continent. It's a tribute to the consistency and
popularity of this 225-seat buffet that little has changed
since FYI South first wrote about the place in September
2005. The seafood, vegetarian and pastry sections are
especially strong. Also, the excellent salad bar ensures
that eating a lot doesn't have to mean you're eating
unhealthily. The selection of dishes on offer in this
plush, 225-seat buffet is modified about every three
weeks, so you won't feel bored even if you pay regular
visits. Also, there are occasional special promotions
-- the most recent one featured Japanese foods. Breakfast
is NT$380 per adult; lunch is NT$550 on weekdays and
NT$650 on weekends; dinner is NT$650 every day of the
week. |

The Market Place
660, SiMen Road, Sec. 1, Tainan City
(B1, Tayih Landis Hotel); (06) 289-9988 ext. 2871
Hours: 6:30 am-10 am; 12 midday-2 pm; 6 pm-9 pm (until
9:30 pm on Fridays)
Credit cards accepted; 10% service charge
The buffet at the five-star Tayih Landis
offers more than 100 different dishes, with Japanese
cuisine being notably popular. The seafood section is
quite special -- not only can you choose how you want
your fish prepared (grilled, steamed, or turned into
a soup), but you can pick your own fish from the ones
laid out on the ice before you. New dishes are often
added to the selection; the most recent ones share a
Canadian theme, and include rabbit, frog and cod. There
are healthy soups rich in Chinese herbs and ginseng.
But if sugar and calories aren't a concern, head for
the desserts. In addition to the usual cakes and fruit,
there's hot chocolate sauce (pour it over a bowlful
of candies). Instead of Haagen-Dazs, the freezer is
full of a premium ice cream brand from Russia. Dim sum,
Vietnamese options and other Asian dishes round out
the buffet. At the Market Place, breakfast is NT$480,
weekday lunch is NT$580. Dinner and weekend meals are
NT$680. For every NT$500 customers spend, they get one
hour of free parking. |
