Reeve's Muntjac (named after the Englishman
who brought the first specimens to Europe from China) is the
smallest kind of deer found in Taiwan. Usually 40 to 70 centimeters
in length, it's no bigger than a dog, and the canine sound
it makes has led to it being nicknamed the "barking deer."
It roams wild in Yushan National Park and other mountainous
areas, and tends to be more active in the night than the day.
The animals are farmed for their meat, which often appears
on wedding-banquet menus. Yongda Beerhouse serves portions
of stir-fried muntjac meat for NT$200. Mountain boar (NT$150
per portion) is also available here, as is seafood and a choice
of draft and bottled beers. There's indoor and outdoor seating
at this beerhouse, which is across from a 24-hour eatery and
catty-corner from a gas station. By Tainan standards, parking
around here is quite easy. |
