Hud La Voos is an aboriginal-themed pub-restaurant
run by the Sun sisters, who grew up in the mountains of Kaohsiung
County. Housed in a 68-year-old building in a small alley
not far from Tainan Railway Station, and colorfully decorated
with paintings, carvings, and animal skulls, the pub serves
up a number of exotic dishes, including baby hornet and mountain
rat. Mountain Boar Skin (NT$250) is cooked in very hot water
and served on a bed of ice. Mountain Boar Meat (NT$150 for
a small serving, NT$300 for large) is cooked with satay sauce,
garlic, ginger, hot peppers, and spring onions. Mountain boars
differ from their lowland counterparts in that they have longer
snouts and more prominent tusks. If you worry that by ordering
mountain boar meat, you're encouraging hunting and environmental
damage, don't -- the animals are not wild, but raised in captivity.
Other dishes are priced from NT$100 to NT$400; large groups
are advised to call a day or two before to make arrangements. |
