In the crook of the elbow where ChangRung
Road turns into ChongDe Road hides an inconspicuous little
Chinese grocery. Absence of an English sign or name has almost
completely hidden this gem of a grocer from Tainan's foreign
community. This shop is a baker's paradise. Stocking pans,
powders, mixes, nuts and all other kinds of obscure baking
knick-knacks you'll find everything you need (and a bunch
of stuff you didn't even know you needed) for that triple-layer,
upside-down, pineapple cheesecake you're been dying to make.
The import selection isn't huge, but it holds a good variety
and packs many items that this writer hasn't seen anywhere
else, like Madras Curry (NT$90 per 450g), tomato paste (NT$46
per can) and real whipping cream (NT$120 per 1L). The large
refrigerated section boasts a dangerous selection of exotic
cheeses and caviar. The fridge is also home to the cheapest
bulk cheese this writer has seen in Taiwan, with 1kg of shredded
mixed (cheddar and mozzarella) cheese for only NT$200. |
