--By Steven Crook, translated by Annie Liu
Lingo Restaurant, which has reopened after
a brief previous existence earlier this year, is perhaps Tainan's
only vegan restaurant. No eggs or dairy products are used.
Chef Joslin, who hails from British Columbia in Canada, is
entirely self-taught, and has been cooking vegan dishes since
she was 18 years old. Saying she "wants to introduce
new food to Taiwan and Taiwanese people," Joslin serves
up several interesting items, including Falafel In A Pita
(NT$200, including an organic shake), various main dishes
(around NT$250), plus desserts such as chocolate cake and
banana bread. To meet the requirements of local vegetarians,
dishes can be ordered without onions and garlic. Joslin describes
the menu as "basically the food I like, so that's what
I serve." Located in a quiet lane not far from the main
Eslite bookstore, Lingo has both outdoor and indoor seating.
Homemade peanut butter, chutney, ketchup, sour cream, sauces,
and cakes can be made to order. Call for details.
