--By Steven Crook, translated by Annie Liu
Opening on the site of what used to be one
of Tainan's oldest beerhouses, not far from National Chengkung
University, the spacious Da Zhang Gui has been completely
remodeled inside and out with lots of wood, and provided with
an intriguingly long menu of Taiwanese rice, noodle, and soup
favorites. Most dishes are priced NT$100 to NT$300. In addition
to pork, beef, chicken, and seafood, there's ostrich and some
other unusual items. Draft beer is reasonably priced: 500
cc of Tiger costs NT$80, while a 1300 cc pitcher is just NT$180.
Bottled beers from Taiwan, China, and Japan are NT$70 to NT$100;
there's also a selection of French red wines, plus local and
foreign liquors. What's more, the owners seem to have a good
taste in music: During this writer's visit, Dido and Coldplay
were playing in the background, loud enough to be heard, but
not too loud.
