HThis coffee shop is set in a pleasing green landscape of fish ponds, pineapple fields, and betel-nut-covered hills. About 30 minutes from downtown Chiayi, and near the Jhuci turnoff of the Second Southern Freeway, Mountain Gate Coffee is a charming wooden structure that hangs over the water. Built by the boss himself, and filled with the items he's collected over the years (old stereo equipment for playing LP records, an old TV, a vintage sewing machine, soda bottles from the 1960s), it's a lovely place to pass the time. Teas are priced from NT$80, coffees from NT$100. Meals, including hot pots, are available. The boss says most of the customers are friends, or know about the place through word-of-mouth. To find Mountain Gate Coffee, follow the Chinese-language signs from YiRen Village. --By Steven Crook, translated by Iva Huang
