In
the heart of Tainan City, near the old City Hall and across
from the near-derelict former Hayashi Department Store, is
Taoban, a restaurant offering Japanese cuisine presented in
a Western style. If you're looking for a cozy place to enjoy
exquisite steaks and be embraced by earthern flue music, Taoban
could be your best choice. The eighth branch in Taiwan, and
the first in South Taiwan, Taoban is part of the Formosa Plastics
Group empire, which includes Wang Steak. Meals here are priced
at NT$450 (plus 10-percent service charge), with beef, lamb,
ribs, freshwater bream, and chicken options. All are roasted
on a pottery plate (called "taoban" in Chinese).
Regular customers include office workers having lunchtime meetings,
and families eating out on the weekend. Most are aged thirty-something
to sixty-something. No magazines or newspapers are offered
here--Taoban's owners want customers to enjoy the food and
good conversation with their companions, instead of being distracted
by reading. --By Iva Huang
