Pan Tien Yen Temple, in Fanlu Township to the east of Chiayi City, has for years been a place where mothers-to-be go to pray. Located high in the hills, where the air is cool and clear, the temple is popular with tourists because day views and night views of the Chianan plain to the west are superb, sunsets are out of this world. Rainbow & Story is one of two new restaurants to take advantage of the scenery. In addition to the indoor dining room, this comfortable and laidback establishment has two outdoor terraces with French cafe-style umbrella tables. The chef prepares a variety of set dishes with meat, vegetables and rice (NT$150 to NT$299). These are very filling--just what you want after a long walk--and represent better value for money than the coffee (no refill) is NT$160.
