Even in winter, south Taiwan has plenty of warm, sunny afternoons when an ice cream really hits the mark. Gela Teria, which is within walking distance of JungJeng Road¡¦s boutiques and movie theaters, has quality Italian-style ice cream, plus sorbets and fruit salads. Most items cost NT$40 to NT$70; eating in is no more expensive than taking away. Just in case the ice cream isn¡¦t cooling enough, the seating area is air-conditioned. Customers are allowed to sample before buying. In addition to the usual fruit-based flavors, there¡¦s: taro; red bean; cherry brandy; Japanese apricot; red wine; and sake. Most intriguing of all is the cheese-flavored ice cream--very likely an acquired taste. By Steven Crook
