Authenic Korean Cuisine
at Gau Lee Guan
By Steven
Crook
Taiwanese
have paid more attention to Korean culture in the last three years
than in the previous fifty. Korean soap operas, such as ¡§Glass
Shoes,¡¨ have been big hits, and Korean food is more popular than
ever.
A
stone¡¦s throw from National Chengkung University, Gau Lee Guan
offers authentic fare prepared by a Korean chef, Mr. Kim. The interior
is unostentatious, but that's unimportant: People come for the food,
which is excellent.
That
Korea¡¦s climate is much colder than Taiwan¡¦s is obvious
from the way meals is prepared and served. Each table is equipped
with a grill; diners are provided with generous portions of
beef, pork or chicken, and cook it to their liking. The advantage
of this is that you can have your meat as rare or well done
as you wish. It also makes for cozy dining on cold days.
Rice
is served in metal bowls with lids, to better keep it warm.
Set meals, which are priced at NT$260 to NT$350, also come
with seaweed soup, and various pickled vegetables. Taiwanese
and Korean alcoholic beverages are available. There's no service
charge, and the waitstaff are efficient and unobtrusive.
