Going
for the middle ground between the cheap hole-in-a-wall eateries
popular with Southeast Asians working in Taiwan, and the plush but
pricey establishments bedecked with Buddha statues and handicrafts,
Thai-wan Bangkok Cruise offers Thai food with a local twist. There
are 15 varieties of hot pot on offer (NT$250 to 350 each), including
every imaginable combination of chicken, seafood, bamboo shoot,
crab, rib, curry and, of course, tom-yam soup. There are also savory
cakes: fruit shrimp, moon shrimp, and sun shrimp (around NT$200).
Thai-wan has been open almost a year. The folks working here are
all Taiwanese, but the cooking staff learned their skills from a
Thai - the proprietor¡¦s younger brother¡¦s wife. The decor is simple
and the tables sprawl over the sidewalk. No Thai beers are available;
local brews are. -- By Steven Crook
