Working
on the assumption that if a restaurant is popular it must be doing
something right, I didn't hesitate to try Lian's. Before six in
the evening this teppanyaki establishment was already two-thirds
full with families, couples, and office workers.
I
was not disappointed. The ingredients were high quality and the
service flawless. In many similar restaurants, the chefs chat with
diners while serving. Not here: The cooking staff at Lian's -- which
opened in October 1995, and derives it moniker from the proprietor's
name, Li Chi-lian --are simply too busy.
Set
meals, priced between NT$189 and NT$399, include soup, rice
and a soft drink, as well as one meat AND one or two seafood
options. There are super-meals designed for two diners to
share. The NT$999 version includes almost a dozen meats, seafoods
and vegetables; the NT$699 has fewer, but is unlikely to leave
anyone hungry. Side orders of mushrooms, tofu, and clams are
available.
Some
people dislike the elbow-by-elbow seating arrangements in
places like this; others enjoy the camaraderie. The spectacle,
of course, is part of the experience. There's something relaxing
about watching the chefs scoop, scrape and shovel chunks of
meat, fish, and portions of vegetables. A flick of butter
here, a dash of lard there. These guys are generous with the
garlic and chili; specify how much or how little of these
you'd like, and you're sure to have a delightful meal.
