The interior of Turk Evi is tastefully adorned with Turkish ornaments, but hungry visitors are drawn to the oven area where, behind glass, Turkish chefs knead and bake pitas, lahmacuns (thin, pizza-like creations) and other delights. Some foods are charcoal grilled out front. To ensure authenticity, many ingredients are imported according to owner Kuo Yi-yi, a Taiwanese lady who grew up in Turkey. Turk Evi offers five set menus (NT$399 - NT$550) served with lentil soup, salad (five choices including peppery Pressed Tomato Salad), dessert and drink. Diners can opt for Ayran -unsweetened Turkish yogurt said to be exceptionally healthy - or Turkish tea (NT$20) or coffee (NT$90), which must be ordered separately. Sutlac (cold rice pudding) is offered for dessert. Main courses consist of "doners," cooked meat shaved from skewers (NT$120 - NT$150 a la carte), thick pitas (NT$150 - NT$250) and lahmacuns with chicken, lamb or beef. Turkey is a Muslim country, so pork is not on the menu. (Steven Crook)
