Note From the Editor
I recently had the enjoyable opportunity to host a Taipei friend who, in his few years of living in Taiwan, had NEVER been to Taichung. Needless to say, I was somewhat horrified at this piece of information. However, we made up for lost time and, after only a few hours, he was remarking on what a great city Taichung was. He returned to Taipei vowing to visit central Taiwan again soon.

Much is made of rivalries and contrasts between Taipei and its number-two counterpart in the south, Kaohsiung. Fortunately, the relationship, geographically and otherwise, between Taipei and the island's number-three city, Taichung, seems to be much more closer. Residents and businesses constantly remark on close ties between the two and tendency for the latest trends and tastes to slide south from Taipei to Taichung first, before eventually reaching the south. Equally important is the fact that Taichung and central Taiwan have become a top getaway for northerners looking for an enjoyable time-out.

For these reasons, we have decided to do a cover story swap of sorts between Taiwan Fun and its Taichung sister, COMPASS, this month. Taipei readers making summer plans should check out Cheryl Robbins' overview of Taichung's charms. In the meantime, Taichung readers will be able to enjoy a similar introduction to Taipei.

If you decide to venture south, take your June Taiwan Fun, but don't forget to also grab a copy of COMPASS when you get there. I hope to see you soon in Taichung!
