Once named "Eight Corners Market", Red Castle in
Hsin Men is a historical building that was a very popular
place for Japanese products during the Japanese colonial era.
Later, it became a venue for traditional Chinese performing
arts. It was once also a movie theater and was dedicated as
a movie museum in 1997. Unfortunately, in July, 1998, it experienced
a major fire and has been closed since then. The Taipei Cultural
Affairs Bureau decided to inject new life into this 100-plus-year-old
historical site, and invited the Paper Windmill Theatre Company
to oversee its operation and maintenance. The company intends
to hold regular stage performances here, including story telling,
concerts, puppet shows and dance performances. Every Wednesday
night, there will be programs for tourists and children's
shows are planned for weekends. It is hoped that this will
become a place where the public can come to enjoy and interact
with art, and that events here with help internationalize
Taiwan's art scene. It is expected that this facility will
open on June 16 and begin performances on June 22.--By Priscilla
