With 27 years of experience under its belt, Roxy opened a fourth location in an alley right across the street from the Far Eastern Shangri-La Hotel. Since then, it has become a haven of sorts for diehard fans of rock 'n' roll, not to mention a dream come true for owner Ling Wei, who for years had planned to open a lounge bar different from the other three Roxy locations and dedicated exclusively to rock.
Roxy Rocker is targeted at customers who grew up with the original Roxy 20-something years ago and now are in need of a comfortable space to enjoy their favorite rock tunes with friends over a few drinks. Most importantly, it is for any music lover who prefers hanging out with a grown-up crowd. The place is designed with a casual American vibe in mind, with comfy sofas all over giving it a relaxing, home-like feel.
Rock 'n' roll lovers out there must visit Roxy Rocker for its extensive vinyl record collection of at least 10,000 albums from Ling Wei's personal stash. Finding something you want on a scavenger hunt through this massive collection also gives the owner a chance to clean and categorize records, which have been stored for years.
While Roxy Rocker doesn't take block reservations, you can book a table or booth for private gatherings, with no special fees added for this. In a departure from many/most nightspots, this place also doesn't have minimum or service charges. Bseides music, there is a three-phase Happy Hour: From 8 to 10 p.m., bottles of Taiwan Beer Gold Label are NT$120; before midnight, two pitchers of Jack Daniel's with Coke or Sprite are NT$1,000; and from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. there is a buy-one-get-one-free deal on tequila, with five brands to choose from.
On the weekends, friendly gatherings can opt for the Roxy Rocker Space Walk (NT$470), served in six tubes and always a good party starter. There are also 10 cocktails invented by employees, like the flavor of the moment, Rainbow Candy (NT$220). If you get a little hungry, try out the snacks of choice for visiting rockers--Nachos (NT$180) and Assorted Deep Fries (NT$260), which allows you to pick three out of five choices: chicken strips, onion rings, calamari, cheese sticks and french fries.
