Years ago, when I first come to Taipei, a friend from the U.S. took me out for a drink. We went to a place on JinHua Street called DV8, which is modeled after my old haunt in San Francisco, also called DV8. Apparently, when the owner of the Taipei bar wanted to open a restaurant, her friend--a native San Franciscan--suggested she model the establishment after his favorite hometown place, right down to the name.
After closing the bar to travel for 18 months, the owner re-opened her bar on FuXing South Road, adjacent to the back gate of Taiwan National University. The new location is pretty similar to the old: There's variety of beer, the TV hanging from the ceiling is always tuned to sports and Happy Hour, complete with free snacks, is a daily ritual. The walls inside the bar are covered with graffiti, messages, and doodles--and that's the way everyone likes it.
To whet your whistle, try DV8's signature drink, the Long Island Iced Tea (NT$300). If you want a little something to munch on, try a handmade Beef Pizza (NT$250) or the Nachos (NT$200), which are served with homemade salsa.
Wine lovers watch out, because every Thursday night is Red Wine Night (NT$100/glass, NT$600/bottle). And let's not forget the daily Happy Hour is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Specials include draft beer for NT$100 and half-price cocktai
