Famous Japanese restaurant Tamura Ginkatsutei first started in the hot springs city of Hakone, Kanagawa in 1973. Such has been its popularity that, during dining hours, large numbers of patrons can be seen lining up for at least half an hour, just to get in and savor the wonderful food. This popularity has remained unchanged with the restaurant's coming to Taiwan. This came about after the owner made a few trips here and, seeing a potential market for his authentic cuisine, opened his first overseas branch in Taipei. This outlet shares the same menu with Japan, allowing diners to savor the exact same tasty selection of dishes. --By Karen Lin, translated by Ann Lee

A. Tanaka Kouji is not only the restaurant's executive chef, but also serves as the manager. The red and black color theme inside provides great contrasts and a unique atmosphere. The Japanese fine-dining ambiance also includes excellent service and low-key but detailed decorations.

B. Braised Japanese Tofu with Fried Pork (NT$350) comes in a sizable portion, and is highly-recommended to those with big appetites. The softly braised tofu has a solid texture, while the quality pork is delivered from Pingtung. The meat has a crispy texture after it is fried, then simmered in the pot with the tofu and its soup. This dish also comes with unlimited amounts of salad, rice and miso soup, and you'll also get a selection of Japanese-style appetizers, marinated dishes, a dessert and beverage.

Tamura Ginkatsutei C. The Signature Tamura Ginkatsutei Set (NT$350) comes with two main courses. One is a shrimp dish about the size of your palm, together with a pork chop and the semi-sweet Tamago Yaki (a sushi dish with a slice of sweetened egg on top, wrapped with seaweed). The other main course is Deep-Fried Pork Chop (NT$200), prepared with multiple steps and served with a special homemade dipping sauce. The moment you take a bite of this memorable pork dish, recommended by the chefs, its fresh meat flavors expand in your month.
