Any company with nearly 30 years of
history is remarkable, and especially so in the restaurant
business. Even more remarkable is the He family's business
has expanded from a restaurant into something that resembles
a food and beverage theme park.
Nestled in pleasant rolling hills with plenty of park
and parking space, the original restaurant has expanded
into three restaurants and cafes as well as an event
site, all run by various members of the He family. There
is a whole day's worth of fun for the family here. The
well-kept park space is complemented by a pool, a playground
and even a small entomology museum.
For the adults, I recommend starting with a coffee,
tea or drink at the Greenhouse Cafe & Bar. This
cozy glass-and-wood box is nicely set amongst trees
on a hillside, creating a tree-house feel. Around the
back is a shaded patio area overlooking the pool. Small
'Shao Kao' set meals are available for NT$230, and cocktails
and bottled beers start at NT$150.
Next, it's time for a full meal, and
for that visit to the original Hill Crest Restaurant
in all its classic Mediterranean-style architectural
glory, complete with archways and tiled roof. This restaurant
is famed for Fried Rice Noodle Ho Family Style, and
their Red Crab (NT$50/liang), plucked from the many
live seafood tanks. I tried the excellent Lamb Rib with
Special Sauce (NT$360/NT$540), the Salty Fish, Chicken
Dice and Bean Curd Pot (NT$240/NT$360) and the Rouge
Tea Goose (NT$300/450). All tasted great and showed
the expertise than comes from nearly 30 years of practice.
After dinner, it is a good idea to check
out the Ecology of Long Way tea and coffee house. With
a curious, stone and white-wall church-like building,
outdoor wooden deck and playground, this is a good place
to relax with an after-dinner tea, coffee or dessert.
During the summer months, we suggest
rounding off the evening with a nightcap back at the
Greenhouse Cafe and Bar.
