Situated next to the Sol Hotel and the canal right in the heart of Hsinchu's pub zone is the fairly new Jacob Garden, taking over the site of the previous Big Tom Ice Cream outlet. The beautiful patio area, with burbling pool, plants, decorative rocks and striking blue light, has been kept and updated for its new role as a daytime cafe/restaurant and evening restaurant/pub. Christmas lights and hanging globes of light add a festive air, and the view over the street offers a great vantage point for people-watching. The food is moderately priced and generally Western and Big Tom ice cream and coffee and tea are available. At night, the beer is a big draw, with regular beers starting at a reasonable NT$120. Some interesting beers are available, including Negra Modelo (NT$160), Czech Pilsner urquell (NT$160) and German Paulaner (NT$280 for 2) among others. Unusually, there is a suprisingly good German white wine menu (NT$1,800+/bottle). As a spot to relax and unwind before an evening out on the town, this spot is without compare!
