Canada
gave the world the concept of multiculturalism, and now
it gives Taiwan an odd but pleasing pastiche that is
Le Ble D'Or, an outdoor microbrew pub located in the
courtyard between Taipei's Holiday Inn and FNAC. What
does multiculturalism have to do with beer? To start
with, this pub serves up three varieties of German beer,
brewed to suit local tastes by a Taiwanese-born brewmaster
who was trained in Quebec. To top it off, the staff wear
Hawaiian-themed outfits. So far, this writer has been
able to sample the lager and stout, both of which are
very acceptable. Irish patrons may complain that the
light stout is served without a head, but brewer Quentin
Yeh says most customers feel cheated if the liquid doesn't
threaten to overflow the glass. The pub's "holy
grail," Weisbier, is also very popular in beer-fruit
slush combinations that help cool sultry Taipei summer
nights. --By Jacques van Wersch, translated by Uvia Chang
