The alleys of Gong Guan feature some interesting little places, but it's not exactly where you'd expect to sample authentic Mexican fast food and some of the hottest peppers in the world. La Jolla is a hole-in-the-wall type place that has seating for a half dozen people. At least half of its business is take-out. Despite being relatively difficult to find (it's located just off the alley that the Dong Nan Ya theater abuts), the little shop with reasonable prices is building up a dedicated clientele for serving up quality Mexican fare. The salsa is tasty - and homemade. If you're a spice freak, ask for the habanera peppers brought in specially from Belize. If not, don't forget to ask the staff to hold the jalapenos. --By Jacques van Wersche, Translated by Uvia Chang
