A quick peep through the curtains of Thai & Thai, located on the first floor of the Mandarina Crown Hotel, offers a glimpse of the splendor of the Kingdom of Thailand.

An Italian visual designer has spent the last few years working on the interior of Thai & Thai, incorporating paudak wood paneling (modeled on 1930s Thai fashions), translucent jade-like walls, mahogany chairs, plus golden and varnished wall designs. Older and traditional Thai themes are mixed together with the non-traditional ones. There are blue, green, yellow, pink, gold and brown Venetian glass screens; the resulting multi-colored glow produces a feast for the eyes. This world of glass is combined with original Thai Buddhist sculpture and carved doorways to produce a soft, mellow and modern dining experience.

Central to Thai & Thai's appeal is, of course, its authentic Thai food. Jenny, the manager, recommends several popular Thai dishes: the fresh taste of seafood in the Fried Seafood And Pineapple Rice (NT$350) is brought out by the sweet and sour flavor of pineapple, and complemented by rice.

Other dishes include the Fried Mince Shrimp Cake (NT$280), which is fried to a nice crispness on the outside, while leaving the inside juicy; the Grilled Sea Bass (NT$580), which uses boneless sea bass seasoned with Thai spices and wrapped in a banana leaf before cooking; and the Fried Crab in Curry Sauce (NT$680). This last-mentioned dish uses fresh crabmeat braised in a curry sauce, creating both exquisite color and flavor. It is served with French bread.

So, if you want to experience a real Thai feast, come to Thai & Thai!
