This
white two-storied building was patterned after the
colonial period of the American South. It has a simple
classical feeling and large courtyard, but still has
a noble and elegant air. The building is a witness
to the great changes in Taiwan, from World War II to
the transfer of power from the Japanese to the Chinese
Nationalists, and its function as residence of the
American consul. After the severing of US-ROC diplomatic
ties in 1979 the bulding was abandoned. Recently, the
Taipei City Bureau of Cultural Affairs entrusted the
building's care to the Taiwan Motion Picture Cultural
Society, after which it has become a center for arts
and culture. The first floor houses an Eslite bookstore
which specializes in movies, and Cafe 25, which offers
light snacks. The Taipei Spot Theater, housed in the
renovated car park, seats 88 people and shows movies
every day. The second floor has many lecture halls
suitable for screenings and discussions. Other designs
include rooms for exhibitions, 6th Avenue Lounge, media
demonstrations, and office space. |
